Plaque is a sticky material which deposits around the teeth. Plaque is composed food debris and bacteria. Plaque can be removed by proper flossing and brushing. If a plaque is not removed then the bacteria in the plaque secrete acid which demineralize the teeth. Demineralization of teeth causes holes in the teeth also known as cavities.

Plaque is formed by consuming starchy and sweet food. Foods like milk, soft drinks, raisins, cakes, and candy are left on the mouth. Bacteria in the mouth live on sugar and starch and produce acids which are harmful to teeth. Plaque can be found near the root of tooth where they can destroy the bone supporting the tooth.

Plaque can be prevented in various ways. The most common method of cleaning teeth is brushing them regularly specially in the place between gums and teeth. Flossing the teeth can also help you in getting rid of food particles. It is a good idea to visit a dentist regularly. A dentist can help you in preventing and treating teeth cavities.

A balanced can help you a lot in improving dental health. You should avoid snacking in between the meals. Never eat before going to bed. Your diet should be rich in calcium and phosphate. Calcium rich diet contains yogurt, cheese, fruits and raw vegetables. According to some studies fluoride containing tooth pastes can also prevent plaque formation as fluoride is having anti glycolytic effect. Never forget to rinse your teeth with vinegar and water in between the meals as water reacts with acids and prevents destruction of teeth. Plaques can be prevented by vaccinating a person against streptococcus mutans as this bacterium is the main cause of cavity formation.
