WHAT IS TOOTH DECAY

Focal demineralization of a tooth is known as tooth decay. The main cause of tooth decay is presence of acid on the surface of teeth. The acid which decays the teeth is produced by bacteria living in plaque. Most common bacteria which can cause tooth decay are streptococcus mutans. Bacteria living in our oral cavity eat the same products as we eat. They live as parasites in our mouth and produce lactic acid as excretory material. Most commonly bacteria consume sugar and starches. If you will eat less sugar as a result less acid will be produced in the mouth.

Every one has millions of bacteria living in their mouth cavity. Poor dental hygiene stimulates growth of bacterial colonies. Bacterial colony is also known as plaque. Dental plaque is a home for oral bacteria. Bacterial plaque is source of acid secretion which stimulates tooth decay. Teeth cavities can be prevented if proper dental care is taken. It is a good idea to brush and floss the teeth after every meal. Try to use a fluoride tooth paste. Avoid eating food which contains sugar and starch such as cake, cookies, caramel, sticky sweets, raisins and taffy.

It is a good idea to regularly visit a dentist as it can help you in preventing plaques and cavities. The main symptom of tooth decay is pain. Pain worsens if you drink hot or cold drinks or breathe in cold air. A person with teeth cavities has foul breath and bad taste in mouth. The teeth become sensitive and break easily. Severe tooth decay can cause abscesses, pus filled sacs in the gums. If you have some of the above symptoms then it is a good idea to visit your dentist.
